Mosaics

Am I just a mosaic of myself, held in the shape of a whole person? ― Emma Newman, Planetfall

Like a splendid mosaic of myriad colors, she in all her hues of sensitivity would paint her feelings in your mind’s gray skies. She was the butterfly making you run after her. She was the Zahir, a mirage that transcended borders and time-zones. ― Avijeet Das

Chartres (France), Fulbert High School's Chapel

Since 1996, the Régie des 3R (Renovate, Restore, Rehabilitate) Association organizes mosaic exhibitions in Chartres every two years, called International Mosaic Symposium (or Meeting), where the organizators award the Picassiette prize. The name of the prize comes from the name of a house which was built by ceramic and other kind of pieces. These exhibitions are one of the largest and most prestigious meetings with hundreds of exhibitors from all over the world. They take place in the chapel which is a part of the Fulbert High School in our time. The chapel belongs to a monastery from the 6th century which was continued to build from 1150, then has been distroyed and reconstructed several times. The present chapel was built in 1859 on the site of the choir of the old abbey church, it is perfect to give a magnificiant athmosphere, a monumental feeling for the exhibitions, just like the big medieval cathedral of the historical city.

My first four mosaic pictures are called “Africa” with portraits, inspired after the photography of the book “African ceremonies” made by Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith. This quadriptyque has been the 3rd prize winner of Picassiette Award's Public Vote.
